/ Work Dinner
The plain derby is the Work Dinner house choice.
For most work dinners, a brown plain derby carries the room more reliably than a dressier oxford or a casual sneaker.

The reason
Its open lacing fits more levels of formality, the upper can take weather, and a repairable sole keeps the shoe useful after the first dinner.
The previous room guidance left the oxford, derby, and clean sneaker too close together. That made the answer depend on taste when the physical conditions already supplied a clearer hierarchy.
The oxford remains the sharper lane for a formal senior room. The clean sneaker remains a peer-room exception. The plain derby is now the default because it crosses the widest useful range while staying quiet, weather-capable, and repairable.
Evidence in the room
- It stays composed with a navy suit, sport coat, or dark denim without becoming the loudest object at the table.
- A rubber-soled version answers rain without changing the room signal.
- A stitched, resoleable construction creates a credible repair path instead of a replacement cycle.
